First Annual Bishop’s Walk – Families Helping Families – is a great success
It was a wonderful First Bishop’s Walk! Whether your Walk was large or small, many parishioners have expressed how much fun they had. One of the organizers in Lamar, Tim Pashia, stated after the event, “It was nice to see the parish at an organized event outside of church. We had a blast!” Mary Lippert from Kimberling City said, “Everyone is asking will we have this walk again. Our Lady of the Cove really enjoyed our time walking and raising funds.”
Coming together as a Catholic community, we raised over $18,000 and almost 1,000 parishioners walked all across southern Missouri to support the programs of Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri and help our neighbors in need. Catholic Charities wishes to express its sincere appreciation to every participating parish and to each and every one of the participants. Thank you for partnering with us in ministry and helping to make our work possible!
There were many parishes that had a nice crowd at their Walk, but when it comes to the award for the parish with the greatest percent of parishioner participation, St. Mary’s Parish in Lamar is the clear winner. St. Mary’s has 219 registered parishioners and 87 registered for the Walk! Although there was no other parish that came close to that level of involvement, there were many parishes that had a truly great showing this first year, including Charleston, Poplar Bluff, Kimberling City, Leopold, Sikeston, and Holy Trinity Parish in Springfield to name a few.
There is also a clear winner in the parish with the most money raised, and this parish has an interesting story to tell. One of its parishioners decided to ask local businesses to become local sponsors for their Walk, and this innovative approach led to an immense increase in total money raised. The winning parish is Sacred Heart Parish in Poplar Bluff with a wonderful donation total of $2,650.00! And their innovative parishioner is Jim Brown. Thank you to the parish and to Jim for your tremendous support!
Bishop Johnston will personally present the trophies to the winning parishes.
We are also so grateful to our overall Walk sponsors, Saint Francis Medical Center, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Coad Chevrolet, Drury Southwest, Meek’s, Mercy and O’Reilly Auto Parts. If you have a chance to thank someone involved with one of these companies, please do so and let them know their support is appreciated. Thank you, too, to Notre Dame Regional High School and Springfield Catholic High School for their generous gift of their facilities and staff time for our Walks in Cape Girardeau and Springfield.
Yes, there will be another Bishop’s Walk for Catholic Charities – Families Helping Families – next year. It will always be the weekend before Palm Sunday weekend. Make plans now to become involved in this fun event for a good cause!
